Japan Women’s Open 2025 Finals Results

OSAKA, Japan – The 2025 Japan Women’s Open (Kinoshita Group Japan Open), a WTA 250 tournament, concluded with a thrilling final weekend, highlighted by Leylah Fernandez’s hard-fought victory in the singles draw. The Canadian, seeded fourth in the tournament, defeated unseeded Czech qualifier Tereza Valentová in a compelling three-set final on Sunday, 6–0, 5–7, 6–3.
The victory marks the fifth WTA Tour singles title of Fernandez’s career. It is also her second title of the 2025 season, following her win at the WTA 500 D.C. Open in July. The final, held at the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka, lasted two hours and 11 minutes.
Singles Final: A Tale of Two Sets and a Decisive Third
The championship match began as a decisive display of dominance by the 23-year-old Fernandez. The Canadian raced through the first set in just 28 minutes, ‘bageling’ the 18-year-old Valentová, who was competing in her first-ever WTA final. Fernandez’s aggressive play and consistent execution saw her comfortably secure the 6–0 lead.
However, the young Czech, who is ranked No. 78 in the world, managed to regroup after appearing shell-shocked during the changeover. Valentová settled her nerves in the second set, finding her rhythm and confidence. She broke the Canadian three times in the set and leveled the match by breaking Fernandez in the 12th game, winning the set 7–5.
The decisive third set showcased the experience of Fernandez. Playing with strapping on her right thigh, the Canadian secured a crucial break in the fourth game to take a 3–1 lead, using a powerful crosscourt backhand followed by a down-the-line backhand winner. While Valentová fought back with another break to narrow the score to 4–3, Fernandez held firm against further break points, leveraging her greater tour experience. She ultimately sealed the match and the championship 6–3 in the final set, with the match concluding when Valentová hit a service return into the net.
For Fernandez, who is ranked 27th in the world, the victory comes after a strong run of five consecutive wins in Osaka. Following the win, she is projected to climb five spots to No. 22 in the WTA Live Rankings and reclaim the Canadian No. 1 ranking.
Doubles Champions: Mladenovic and Townsend Triumph
The doubles title was claimed on Saturday by the second-seeded duo of Kristina Mladenovic of France and Taylor Townsend of the United States. They defeated the pairing of Storm Hunter (Australia) and Desirae Krawczyk (USA) in a closely contested final with a super tiebreak finish: 6–4, 2–6, [10–5].
The match saw Mladenovic and Townsend take the opening set 6–4. Hunter and Krawczyk responded emphatically in the second set, dominating to win 6–2 and force the champions tiebreak. The second seeds proved stronger in the decisive tiebreak, prevailing [10–5] to secure the title.
This victory marks the first title as a team for Mladenovic and Townsend. For Mladenovic, it is her 29th career WTA doubles title. For Townsend, a two-time Grand Slam champion in doubles and current world No. 2, the Osaka title is her 11th career WTA doubles championship and her fourth of the 2025 season.
