ROTTERDAM โ€” Just a day after hoisting the trophy in Melbourne, world-renowned tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the ABN AMRO Open. The defending champion cited physical exhaustion following a grueling two-week run at the Australian Open as the primary reason for his absence.

The 52nd edition of the tournament, which begins this Saturday in Rotterdam, will now be without its reigning victor.

A “Difficult Decision” for the Champ

Alcaraz reached the decision on Monday morning after consulting with his medical and coaching staff. Despite his desire to defend the title he won last year, the sheer physical toll of his Grand Slam victory required a change in plans.

“I need time to recover after the long series in Australia,” Alcaraz said in an official statement. “Itโ€™s disappointing not to be able to return after winning the title last year. I had a great time in Rotterdam and hope to return soon.”

Tournament director Richard Krajicek expressed understanding, noting that the intensity of the Australian Open often leaves players depleted. “It is a shame for both him and us that his fantastic result is preventing him from participating,” Krajicek remarked.

Zverev Leads the Field

With Alcaraz sidelined, the spotlight shifts to world number four Alexander Zverev, who moves up to become the tournament’s top seed. Despite the loss of Alcaraz, the Rotterdam lineup remains formidable, featuring:

  • Top Contenders: Alex de Minaur, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Jack Draper.
  • Former Champions: Daniil Medvedev and veteran Stan Wawrinka.
  • Wildcards & Reserves: Rising French powerhouse Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard will enter the main draw to take Alcarazโ€™s place.

Krajicek remains optimistic about the event’s depth, stating that the organization intentionally builds a “broad field” to protect against the inevitable injuries and withdrawals that follow major slams.
