ATP Tournament Profile

Tournament History and Details

The Stockholm Open was first held in 1969, a year after the start of the Open Era. The tournament was founded by former world player Sven Davidson and quickly became a prestigious stop on the professional circuit. Over its storied history, the event has attracted some of the biggest names in tennis, with a roll call of past champions that includes Swedish legends like Björn Borg, Mats Wilander, and Stefan Edberg, as well as international superstars such as John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal. The tournament’s current format as an ATP 250 event saw it provide valuable ranking points and a competitive prize money pool, making it an important stop on the ATP’s indoor hard court swing in the final months of the season. The 2025 edition maintained this tradition, offering a 28-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw.

Venue

The tournament was held at the historic Kungliga Tennishallen, or the Royal Tennis Hall. This venue has been the home of the Stockholm Open since its inception in 1969. The hall, which was built in 1943, has a seating capacity of 5,000 for tennis events. The courts were indoor hard courts, providing a fast-paced and high-bouncing surface that often favored aggressive play. Beyond the Stockholm Open, the Kungliga Tennishallen has a rich history, having hosted the year-end Masters tournament in 1975 and several Davis Cup ties. The venue is owned and operated by three non-profit tennis organizations: Salk, the Stockholm Tennis Federation, and KLTK.

Player Field

The 2025 Stockholm Open attracted a strong field of players, including several of the ATP Tour’s top contenders and former champions. The top seed for the singles draw was former world No. 2 Casper Ruud, who was looking to add a second title to his season. The defending champion, American Tommy Paul, returned to Stockholm to try and retain his title, coming in as the second seed.

Other notable players in the main draw included:

  • Denis Shapovalov: The 2019 Stockholm Open champion, who was looking to build on a successful North American hard court swing.
  • Grigor Dimitrov: The veteran Bulgarian and 2013 Stockholm Open winner, who was making his return to the tour after an injury at Wimbledon.
  • Ugo Humbert: The French No. 1 and a dangerous unseeded player in the draw.
  • Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego: A strong Italian contingent, with both players hoping for a deep run.
  • Marin Čilić: The former Grand Slam champion brought his powerful game to the indoor courts.
  • Cameron Norrie: The British No. 1, known for his unique style of play.

The tournament’s competitive field was a mix of established stars and up-and-coming talent, promising an exciting week of tennis for the Swedish fans.
