WTA 1000

« Back to Glossary Index

The WTA 1000 series represents the highest tier of elite events on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour outside of the Grand Slams and the year-end WTA Finals. Established during the 2021 tour reorganization, the category consolidated the former WTA Premier Mandatory and Premier 5 tiers into a unified structure.

Initially, only four of the nine annual events were designated as mandatory. However, a major expansion in 2024 increased the field to 10 mandatory tournaments, standardizing top-player participation and extending most event draw sizes across two-week calendars.
