2026 Billie Jean King Cup Finals: Overview, Schedule, Teams, and More

The 2026 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals are underway in Shenzhen, China, with eight nations competing for the biggest prize in women’s international team tennis.

The tournament runs from September 22 to 27, 2026 at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre Arena. China qualified automatically as the host nation, while Italy, Great Britain, Czechia, Kazakhstan, Spain, Ukraine and Belgium earned their places through the April Qualifiers.

The competition began on Tuesday with Czechia defeating Great Britain 2-0, making the 11-time champions the first team to reach the semi-finals.

Italy enters Shenzhen as the two-time defending champion after winning the title in 2024 and 2025. Tathiana Garbin’s team is now trying to become the first nation since Czechia in 2016 to win three consecutive Billie Jean King Cup titles.

A record 148 nations entered the Billie Jean King Cup across all levels in 2026, but only eight made it to the Finals.

The Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre is also known as the Spring Cocoon because of its distinctive roof design. The complex opened in 2011, and its indoor arena has a capacity of around 9,200 spectators. It previously hosted the 2019 WTA Finals.

How Does the Billie Jean King Cup Finals Format Work?

The eight teams compete in a straight knockout tournament consisting of the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

Each tie begins with two singles matches. If the nations split those matches 1-1, a doubles match decides which team advances.

The first nation to win two matches wins the tie. All matches are played as best-of-three tiebreak sets with regular advantage scoring. Each tie is completed in one day.

This means the tournament can move quickly. Czechia, for example, did not need a doubles match against Great Britain after Marie Bouzkova and Linda Noskova both won their singles matches.

The official schedule places Czechia’s semi-final on Friday against the winner of Spain vs Kazakhstan. The other half of the bracket will be decided by Ukraine vs Belgium and China vs Italy on Thursday.

Quarter-final 1: Czechia 2-0 Great Britain

Czechia made the perfect start to its latest title challenge by eliminating Great Britain 2-0 in the opening quarter-final.

Marie Bouzkova gave Czechia the first point after surviving a marathon against Sonay Kartal. Bouzkova won 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 59 minutes.

Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova then finished the job with a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over Katie Boulter. The result sent Czechia into the semi-finals for the first time since 2023.

Czechia has won the competition 11 times, making it the second-most successful nation in Billie Jean King Cup history behind the United States. Its most recent title came in 2018.

Great Britain’s defeat ended its bid to reach the semi-finals for a third consecutive year and for the fourth time in five editions. Anne Keothavong had previously guided Britain to the last four in 2022, 2024 and 2025.

Czechia will now face either Spain or Kazakhstan on Friday.

Quarter-final 2: Spain vs Kazakhstan

Wednesday, September 23 — 5:00 PM local time

Spain and Kazakhstan both returned to Shenzhen after being eliminated in the quarter-finals in 2025.

Spain is seeking its sixth Billie Jean King Cup title. All five of its previous championships came during the country’s golden era in the 1990s.

Kazakhstan, meanwhile, has never reached a Billie Jean King Cup semi-final. Victory over Spain would therefore represent its best result in the competition.

One major difference from early team announcements is the absence of Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan’s current Finals squad. Instead, experienced Billie Jean King Cup campaigner Yulia Putintseva leads the team.

Putintseva played a major role in qualification. She won both of her singles matches against Canada in April, including a three-hour, 39-minute victory over former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu.

Spain’s squad includes Cristina Bucsa, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Kaitlin Quevedo, Marina Bassols Ribera and Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Bucsa was added to the team after missing April’s Qualifier through injury. Spain also has an exciting option in Quevedo, who won both of her singles matches on her Billie Jean King Cup debut against Slovenia.

The two nations have met only once before. Spain defeated Kazakhstan 3-0 at the 2022 Finals in Glasgow.

Quarter-final 3: Ukraine vs Belgium

Thursday, September 24 — 10:00 AM local time

Ukraine returns to Shenzhen hoping to build on its best-ever Billie Jean King Cup performance.

The team reached the semi-finals in 2025, beating Spain before falling to eventual champion Italy.

Elina Svitolina remains the leading figure in the Ukrainian squad. She has been representing her country for more than a decade and entered this Finals campaign with a 19-10 Billie Jean King Cup singles record.

Ukraine’s current nominated team is:

Elina Svitolina, Oleksandra Oliynykova, Dayana Yastremska and Lyudmyla Kichenok, with Illya Marchenko as captain.

That is an important change from earlier nominations, as Marta Kostyuk is not part of the current Finals squad.

Belgium has also arrived without one of its biggest names. Elise Mertens is not in the Finals team, leaving Hanne Vandewinkel as the leading singles option.

Vandewinkel has been a major part of Belgium’s recent rise. The 22-year-old helped Belgium defeat the United States 3-1 in April, one of the biggest results of the Qualifiers.

Belgium won its only Billie Jean King Cup title in 2001, while Ukraine is still searching for its first.

The two nations have met only once before, with Ukraine winning 3-2 in 2008.

Quarter-final 4: China vs Italy

Thursday, September 24 — not before 5:00 PM local time

The final quarter-final is one of the biggest ties of the opening round.

Host nation China faces two-time defending champion Italy in a rematch of their 2025 quarter-final.

Italy won that meeting 2-0 before going on to lift the trophy.

This year China has an important addition: Zheng Qinwen. The Paris 2024 Olympic singles champion missed last year’s Finals through injury but returns to lead the host nation’s challenge.

Zheng also arrives after a strong US Open run. She came through qualifying before reaching the quarter-finals, helping her climb back up the rankings following a long recovery from elbow surgery.

Italy will once again rely on the experience of Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani, who were key members of the teams that won the competition in 2024 and 2025.

Italy has reached the final in each of the last three seasons and is now chasing a rare three-peat.

China has never won the Billie Jean King Cup. Its best result was a semi-final appearance in 2008.

Updated 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Finals Squads

How the Eight Teams Reached Shenzhen

China received automatic qualification as the host nation.

The remaining seven teams earned their places through home-and-away Qualifiers in April.

Czechia survived the closest Qualifier, beating Switzerland in a five-match tie. Belgium produced one of the biggest surprises by eliminating 18-time champion USA, while Great Britain won away against seven-time champion Australia.

Players to Watch in Shenzhen

Linda Noskova — Czechia

Noskova entered the Finals as one of the players in the best form.

The 21-year-old won her maiden Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon 2026, defeating Czech teammate Karolina Muchova in the final. She then reached the US Open quarter-finals and climbed to a career-high No. 6.

She has already made her mark in Shenzhen by beating Katie Boulter and sending Czechia into the semi-finals.

Jasmine Paolini — Italy

Paolini remains at the heart of Italy’s attempt to win a third consecutive title.

She has been a major part of Italy’s recent Billie Jean King Cup success in both singles and doubles and again shares the squad with experienced doubles specialist Sara Errani.

Italy’s ability to handle pressure in team competition remains one of its biggest strengths.

Zheng Qinwen — China

Zheng’s return gives the hosts a genuine top-level singles weapon.

The Olympic champion missed the 2025 Finals but has recovered from elbow surgery and arrives after reaching the 2026 US Open quarter-finals.

Elina Svitolina — Ukraine

Svitolina remains the leader of a Ukrainian team that reached its first Billie Jean King Cup semi-final last season.

Her experience and strong record when representing Ukraine make her especially important in the knockout format.

Yulia Putintseva — Kazakhstan

With Rybakina not in the squad, Putintseva takes an even more important role.

She is Kazakhstan’s most successful Billie Jean King Cup singles player and helped send the team to Shenzhen with two wins against Canada in April.

Italy’s Bid for a Three-Peat

Italy enters the Finals with the clearest recent record of success.

The team won the Billie Jean King Cup in 2024 and 2025 and has appeared in each of the last three finals.

A victory in Shenzhen this year would make Italy the first nation since Czechia’s run ending in 2016 to win three consecutive titles.

The Italians also return with the same five-player squad that won the title last year, giving captain Tathiana Garbin continuity and considerable experience.

Their first obstacle, however, will be the host nation and a Shenzhen crowd firmly behind Zheng Qinwen and China.

Czechia Back Among the Contenders

Czechia missed the 2025 Finals but has quickly re-established itself as one of the teams to watch.

The 11-time champions returned by surviving Switzerland 3-2 in the Qualifiers and then became the first semi-finalist in Shenzhen with their 2-0 victory over Great Britain.

New captain Barbora Strycova also knows exactly what success in this competition looks like. During her playing career, she was part of six Czech title-winning teams between 2011 and 2018.

Czechia will face Spain or Kazakhstan for a place in the final.

What Happens After the Finals?

The Billie Jean King Cup season does not end in Shenzhen for every nation.

The seven countries that lost in April’s Qualifiers — Australia, Canada, Japan, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland and the United States — move into the 2026 Play-offs alongside seven nations that advanced from the Regional Group I competitions.

The 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs are scheduled for November 20–22, although individual home-and-away ties may be played over two days within that window. The winners will qualify for the 2027 Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers.

2026 Billie Jean King Cup Finals at a Glance

The 2026 Finals have already produced their first semi-finalist, with Czechia knocking out Great Britain on opening day.

Spain and Kazakhstan are next to take the court, followed by a Thursday double-header featuring Ukraine against Belgium and host China against defending champion Italy.

From there, only four teams will remain.

Czechia is chasing a record-extending 12th title for the nation, Italy is seeking a third championship in a row, Spain is looking to end a long title drought, while Kazakhstan and Ukraine are among the teams hoping to achieve their best-ever result.

The six-day tournament concludes with the Billie Jean King Cup Final on Sunday, September 27 at 5:00 PM in Shenzhen.
