Czechia became the first nation through to the semi-finals of the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, defeating Great Britain 2-0 in the opening quarter-final in Shenzhen.

Marie Bouzkova survived a nearly three-hour battle against Sonay Kartal before Linda Noskova, the reigning Wimbledon champion and world No. 6, delivered the decisive second point with a straight-sets victory over British No. 1 Katie Boulter.

The victory sent the 11-time champions into the Billie Jean King Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2023 and extended Czechia’s recent dominance in its rivalry with Great Britain.

Match 1: Marie Bouzkova def. Sonay Kartal 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4

The opening match of the 2026 Finals immediately produced one of the tournament’s first major battles.

Marie Bouzkova defeated Sonay Kartal 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4 after two hours and 59 minutes, giving Czechia a vital 1-0 advantage.

Kartal was playing her first competitive match in six months after being sidelined by a back injury, but there were few signs of rust early in the contest. She broke Bouzkova at the start of the opening set and briefly moved into a 2-0 lead before the Czech responded.

Neither player was able to establish lasting control as the first set developed, and a tiebreak was eventually required. That was where Bouzkova pulled clear, racing through the breaker 7-2 to take the opening set.

Kartal responded impressively.

The Briton again struck early in the second set, but this time she protected the advantage. Bouzkova threatened late in the set and saved break points to remain within touching distance, only for Kartal to close it out 6-4 and force a deciding set.

The momentum remained with Great Britain when Kartal broke in the third game of the decider.

It did not last long.

Bouzkova immediately broke back and then began to take control, winning four consecutive games to move ahead 5-2.

Kartal refused to disappear. She saved three match points, held serve and then broke Bouzkova as the Czech tried to serve out the match, reducing the deficit to 5-4.

But Bouzkova responded at the critical moment. She broke Kartal to love in the following game to finally complete a tense 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4 victory and put Czechia halfway to the semi-finals.

The performance was another important Billie Jean King Cup victory for Bouzkova. She had also been responsible for the decisive fifth match when Czechia defeated Switzerland 3-2 in April’s Qualifiers, beating Viktorija Golubic to secure the team’s place in Shenzhen.

Match 2: Linda Noskova def. Katie Boulter 6-2, 7-6(3)

With Czechia one win away from advancing, Linda Noskova made sure a deciding doubles match would not be needed.

Noskova defeated Katie Boulter 6-2, 7-6(3), continuing an outstanding run in Billie Jean King Cup singles and sending Czechia into the last four.

The reigning Wimbledon champion immediately took control.

Noskova broke twice on her way to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, and although Boulter managed to settle into the match during the closing games, the Briton could not recover the early deficit.

Noskova took the first set 6-2.

Boulter produced a much stronger response in the second.

With Great Britain’s tournament hopes now hanging on every game, she stayed with Noskova throughout the set and earned an opportunity at 4-3 when she moved to 0-30 on the Czech’s serve.

Noskova escaped the danger and then created two break-point opportunities of her own in the following game. Boulter also survived, and neither player surrendered serve before the set reached a tiebreak.

That was where Noskova’s greater attacking firepower proved decisive.

The Czech moved ahead early and maintained control before closing out the tiebreak 7-3 to secure the match and the tie. Noskova produced 15 aces across the contest and won 78% of the points behind her first serve, according to the LTA’s match report.

Her 6-2, 7-6(3) victory made the overall score Czechia 2-0 Great Britain, meaning the doubles rubber was no longer required.

Bouzkova Sets the Platform, Noskova Finishes the Job

Although the final tie score suggests a relatively comfortable Czech victory, both singles matches contained periods when Great Britain threatened to change the direction of the contest.

Kartal’s performance was particularly encouraging considering the length of her absence. Playing competitively for the first time since March, she took Bouzkova into a deciding set and even held an early break before the Czech regained control.

Boulter similarly pushed Noskova much harder in the second set after being overwhelmed early.

The difference was Czechia’s ability to deliver at the biggest moments.

Bouzkova immediately recovered after losing her serve in the deciding set against Kartal, while Noskova raised her level when the second-set tiebreak arrived against Boulter.

Those two performances were enough to prevent Great Britain from reaching the semi-finals for a third consecutive year. Britain had made the last four in each of the previous two editions, including a 2025 run that ended with defeat to the United States. Their defeat to Czechia also ended their bid to reach the semi-finals for the fourth time in five years.

Czechia Return to the Final Four

Czechia’s victory represents another significant step for one of the most successful nations in the history of the competition.

The Czechs have won the Billie Jean King Cup 11 times and returned to the Finals this year after missing the 2025 edition. Their path back to Shenzhen was anything but straightforward, with April’s Qualifier against Switzerland going all the way to a deciding fifth match.

The team is also competing under new captain Barbora Strycova, who took over from long-serving Petr Pala ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Strycova knows the competition particularly well. During her playing career, she was part of Czech championship teams in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018, giving the current squad a captain with extensive experience of winning national-team tennis at the highest level.

Her first Finals tie as captain could hardly have produced a better result.

What’s Next for Czechia?

Czechia advances to Semi-final 1 on Friday, September 25 at 5:00 p.m. local time in Shenzhen.

Their opponent will be the winner of the second quarter-final between Spain and Kazakhstan, scheduled for Wednesday, September 23.

That means Czechia will receive two full days without competition after its opening-round victory — a potentially valuable advantage after Bouzkova spent almost three hours on court against Kartal.

For Great Britain, meanwhile, the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup campaign is over. Anne Keothavong’s team will return to the Qualifiers in 2027 as it attempts to earn another place at the Finals.
