Elena Rybakina successfully defended her BNB Ningbo Open title on Sunday, October 25, defeating Leylah Fernandez 6–2, 6–2 in a commanding championship performance.

The World No. 1 needed only 1 hour and 16 minutes to complete the victory. Rybakina broke Fernandez twice in each set and did not lose her own serve at any point in the final.

The victory gave Rybakina her fourth WTA singles title of 2026, more than any other player on Tour this season, and the 15th tour-level singles title of her career. It also made her the first player to successfully defend the Ningbo Open title.

In doubles, unseeded Desirae Krawczyk and Fanny Stollar survived a three-set battle against top seeds Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez, winning 7–6(5), 5–7, [10–6].

The WTA 500 tournament was played from October 19–25 on outdoor hard courts in Ningbo, China. The 2026 edition featured a 28-player singles draw and 16-team doubles draw, with a total financial commitment of $1,206,446.

Rybakina Dominates Fernandez in the Final

The singles final matched the tournament’s top seed and defending champion against an in-form Fernandez, who had already produced several difficult comeback victories during the week.

But Rybakina quickly took control.

The opening four games were competitive before the Kazakh broke Fernandez in the fifth game. From there, her powerful serving and aggressive groundstrokes began to dictate the match.

Rybakina earned another break before closing out the opening set 6–2 in 38 minutes.

Fernandez tried to apply more pressure early in the second set, but Rybakina remained composed.

She broke again for a 2–1 lead, protected her own serve and gradually pulled away. Another break later in the set put the defending champion firmly in control.

Rybakina eventually sealed the championship with her 24th winner of the match, completing another 6–2 set.

The final statistics underlined her dominance: Rybakina broke serve four times and never faced the setback of losing her own serve throughout the 76-minute match.

Fourth WTA Title of 2026 for Rybakina

Ningbo continued an outstanding season for Rybakina.

Her four titles in 2026 have come at:

Australian Open
Stuttgart
US Open
Ningbo Open

No other WTA player has won more singles titles this season.

The Ningbo trophy was also the 15th WTA singles title of Rybakina’s career and her ninth on hard courts.

Seven of those 15 titles have come at WTA 500 level.

Her victory over Fernandez was her 53rd tour-level match win of the season, also the highest total on the WTA Tour at the conclusion of Ningbo. Mirra Andreeva and Jessica Pegula were next with 50 wins each.

Rybakina Successfully Defends a Title for the First Time

Ningbo also produced an important career first.

Rybakina won the tournament in 2025 and returned one year later to successfully defend the trophy, extending her perfect tournament record to 8–0.

The World No. 1 has therefore won the title in both of her appearances in Ningbo.

She also became the first player to successfully defend the Ningbo Open singles championship since the tournament began in 2010.

Rybakina described Ningbo as a particularly special tournament after the final, noting that her 2025 victory there helped spark the strong run that eventually carried her to the WTA Finals title later that season.

Elena Rybakina’s Road to the 2026 Ningbo Open Title

As the No. 1 seed, Rybakina received a first-round bye.

QuarterfinalKatarzyna Kawa (POL)6–1, 3–6, 6–1
SemifinalDiana Shnaider [6]6–3, 7–5
FinalLeylah Fernandez (CAN)6–2, 6–2

Her opening match lasted only around 30 minutes, with Polina Kudermetova retiring while trailing 5–0.

Rybakina then faced a much more serious challenge from qualifier Katarzyna Kawa.

She dominated the opening set 6–1 but lost momentum in the second as Kawa levelled the match 6–3. Rybakina responded immediately, racing to a 3–0 lead in the deciding set and eventually winning 6–1, 3–6, 6–1 in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Rybakina Survives Shnaider Test in Semifinal

The semifinal scoreline against Diana Shnaider — 6–3, 7–5 — looks relatively comfortable, but the match was much tougher than the numbers suggest.

Rybakina needed an extraordinary 11 set points before finally closing out the opening set.

She then served for the match in the second set but was broken to love, allowing Shnaider back into contention.

The World No. 1 regrouped and eventually broke again to complete the victory in 1 hour and 35 minutes, reaching the Ningbo final for the second consecutive season.

She entered the championship match having lost only one completed set during the tournament.

Against Fernandez, there would be no such scare.

Rybakina Extends Head-to-Head Lead Over Fernandez

The Ningbo final was the sixth tour-level meeting between Rybakina and Fernandez.

Rybakina’s victory improved her head-to-head record against the Canadian to 4–2 and marked her third consecutive win in their rivalry.

Their previous encounter had been dramatically different.

In the Stuttgart quarterfinals earlier in 2026, Rybakina needed three hours to beat Fernandez 6–7(5), 6–4, 7–6(6), saving two match points along the way.

In Ningbo, the World No. 1 needed little more than a third of that time.

Fernandez Finishes Another Strong Asian Swing

Despite the defeat, Ningbo completed another strong Asian Swing for Leylah Fernandez.

The Canadian had won the Singapore Tennis Open in September and arrived at the Ningbo final with an 11–2 record since the start of the Asian Swing.

Ningbo was her second final of the 2026 season and the 10th WTA singles final of her career.

She had to work considerably harder than Rybakina to reach Sunday’s championship match.

Fernandez needed three consecutive three-set victories to reach the semifinals.

She was particularly close to elimination in the first round against Elise Mertens, falling behind 5–3 in the deciding set before winning the final four games.

Her second-round battle against Sasnovich lasted 3 hours and 3 minutes, with Fernandez eventually prevailing 7–5, 6–7(3), 6–3.

She then came from a set down once again against Alexandrova, winning 4–6, 6–2, 6–1.

Only in the semifinal did Fernandez finally win in straight sets, defeating Marie Bouzkova 6–3, 7–5 in 1 hour and 58 minutes.

Rybakina, however, proved one challenge too many.

Krawczyk and Stollar Win Ningbo Doubles Title

Desirae Krawczyk and Fanny Stollar completed an impressive unseeded title run by defeating No. 1 seeds Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 7–6(5), 5–7, [10–6] in the doubles final.

The opening set went all the way to a tie-break, where Krawczyk and Stollar edged ahead 7–5.

Bucsa and Melichar-Martinez responded in the second set, taking it 7–5 and sending the championship to a Match Tie-break.

But the American-Hungarian team quickly established the advantage in the decider and completed the victory 10–6 to lift the trophy.

For Krawczyk, Ningbo added another WTA doubles title to a career that already included 13 tour-level doubles championships before the tournament.

Stollar entered the week with five career WTA doubles titles, making Ningbo another significant addition to her résumé.

Krawczyk and Stollar’s Road to the Title

Krawczyk and Stollar were unseeded but defeated seeded teams and survived three consecutive close matches on their way to the championship.

They immediately made a statement by defeating fourth seeds Anna Danilina and Jiang Xinyu 6–3, 6–4 in their opening match.

Their quarterfinal was considerably more difficult.

After losing the first set to Kozyreva and Lumsden, Krawczyk and Stollar survived a second-set tie-break before taking the Match Tie-break 10–4.

Another pair of tie-breaks followed in the semifinals.

They defeated Eikeri and Gleason 7–6(8), 7–6(5), reaching the final without needing a deciding Match Tie-break despite two extremely close sets.

Then they defeated the tournament’s top seeds to finish the week as champions.

Melichar-Martinez Falls Short of Successful Title Defense

Nicole Melichar-Martinez entered the tournament as one of the reigning Ningbo doubles champions.

She won the 2025 title alongside Liudmila Samsonova, defeating Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani 5–7, 6–4, [10–8] in the final.

Samsonova did not compete in the 2026 doubles event, so Melichar-Martinez partnered with Cristina Bucsa instead.

The new combination earned the No. 1 seeding and reached the championship match, but Krawczyk and Stollar prevented Melichar-Martinez from winning Ningbo in consecutive seasons.

For Rybakina, Ningbo provided another statement in what has already been an exceptional 2026 season.

She arrived as the defending champion and World No. 1, survived a difficult quarterfinal against Kawa and a complicated semifinal against Shnaider, and then produced her best tennis of the week when the trophy was on the line.

The final victory delivered her fourth title of the season, 15th career trophy, 53rd match win of 2026 and first successful back-to-back title defense.

Krawczyk and Stollar took a very different route to their championship, surviving repeated tie-break pressure before upsetting the No. 1 seeds in the final.

Together, the two results completed the 2026 Ningbo Open with a defending World No. 1 singles champion and a new unseeded doubles championship team.
