Harriet Dart completed the best week of her career on Sunday, November 1, coming from a set down to defeat Lilli Tagger 4–6, 6–3, 6–4 and win the Guangzhou Open.

The 30-year-old Briton entered the tournament through qualifying and had never previously reached a WTA Tour singles final. Seven matches later, she was a tour-level champion.

The championship match lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes. Tagger took the opening set, but Dart broke late in the second to force a decider before securing the decisive break in the seventh game of the final set.

The Guangzhou Open is a WTA 250 event played on outdoor hard courts at the Nansha International Tennis Center. The 2026 edition featured 32 singles players, 16 doubles teams and a total financial commitment of $283,347.

Dart Comes Back to Beat Tagger

Tagger made the better start in the singles final, breaking immediately and eventually closing out the opening set 6–4.

Dart responded well in the second. The set stayed on serve until 4–3, when the Briton finally created her opportunity and broke for 5–3 before serving it out.

The deciding set became much more chaotic, featuring five breaks of serve.

Dart eventually broke for the decisive advantage in the seventh game and then saved two break points to hold for 5–3. She missed two championship points on Tagger’s serve in the next game but remained composed and served out the match at 5–4.

The victory gave Dart the first WTA singles title of her career.

First WTA Title at Age 30

Dart’s breakthrough came relatively late in her career.

Before Guangzhou, her best WTA Tour result had been a semifinal appearance in Cluj-Napoca in 2024. She arrived in China outside the Top 100 and had to play two qualifying matches merely to enter the main draw.

She then won six of her seven Guangzhou matches in three sets, including qualifying and the final.

Dart also became the first qualifier to win the Guangzhou Open since Li Na captured the inaugural tournament in 2004, and the first British woman to win the singles title at the event.

Her title run was also enough to lift her back into the WTA Top 100.

Dart’s biggest escape came in the semifinals.

Chinese wildcard Sun Xinran led by a set and held three match points at 5–4 in the second. Dart saved all three, dominated the tie-break 7–1 and then won the deciding set 6–0.

That win sent Dart into her first WTA final.

Tagger Falls Short of Second WTA Title

Tagger, only 18 years old, entered the final as the No. 4 seed.

The Austrian had already won her first WTA Tour singles title in Prague earlier in 2026 and reached the Guangzhou final after beating Kaitlin Quevedo 6–2, 6–0 in just 52 minutes in the semifinals.

Her road to the final also included victories over Venus Williams, Magda Linette and Shi Han.

Tagger came within one set of adding a second title, but Dart’s experience and resilience ultimately decided the match.

Kudermetova and Timofeeva Win First Doubles Titles

In the doubles final, Polina Kudermetova and Maria Timofeeva defeated Chinese Taipei’s Cho I-hsuan and Cho Yi-tsen 7–5, 7–6(1).

The victory gave both players their first WTA Tour doubles title.

Kudermetova and Timofeeva were unseeded but defeated several strong teams during the week.

In the quarterfinals, they beat fourth seeds Eri Hozumi and Andreja Klepac 7–6(4), 6–1.

Their semifinal drew additional attention because they faced Janice Tjen and Venus Williams.

Kudermetova and Timofeeva won a tight contest 6–4, 6–7(8), [10–6], ending the wildcard team’s run after 1 hour and 45 minutes.

They then finished the tournament without needing a Match Tie-break in the final.

Defending Champions Do Not Retain Their Titles

Defending singles champion Ann Li did not compete in Guangzhou in 2026, choosing to play the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo instead.

In doubles, 2025 champions Katarzyna Piter and Janice Tjen did not reunite.

Piter did not compete, while Tjen partnered Venus Williams after the pair received a wildcard. They reached the semifinals before losing to the eventual champions.
