2026 Chengdu Open Final Results: Davidovich Fokina Beats Hurkacz for Second ATP Title

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina made a winning return to the ATP Tour at the 2026 Chengdu Open, defeating Hubert Hurkacz 6–4, 7–6(7) in Tuesday’s final to lift his second tour-level trophy.

The 27-year-old Spaniard had not played a tour-level event since Umag in July because of a back injury, but returned in impressive fashion in Chengdu. His victory came three months after he broke through for his maiden ATP Tour title on the grass courts of Mallorca.

The Chengdu Open was held from September 23–29 on outdoor hard courts at the Sichuan International Tennis Center in Chengdu, China. The ATP 250 event featured a 28-player singles draw and 16-team doubles draw, with $1,210,115 in total prize money.

Davidovich Fokina Wins Second ATP Tour Title

Davidovich Fokina entered Chengdu with a very different relationship with championship matches than he had at the beginning of the season.

The Spaniard lost his first five ATP Tour finals, including several painful near-misses during the 2025 season. That run finally ended in Mallorca in June 2026, where he defeated Ethan Quinn 7–6(4), 6–3 to win his first title.

Three months later, he was a champion again.

Against Hurkacz, Davidovich Fokina immediately put pressure on one of the best servers on the ATP Tour. Hurkacz needed around 12 minutes to survive his first service game before the Spaniard eventually made the breakthrough in the seventh game.

That single break was enough for Davidovich Fokina to take the opening set 6–4.

Hurkacz raised his level in the second set, and neither player was able to break serve. The match therefore moved into a tie-break — where the Pole appeared ready to force a deciding set.

Hurkacz built a 6–3 lead, giving himself three consecutive set points.

Davidovich Fokina refused to give in.

The Spaniard saved all three and then survived another set point later in the breaker. From 3–6 down, he won six of the final seven points, eventually closing out the tie-break 9–7 and the championship after one hour and 46 minutes.

Perhaps the most impressive statistic was that Davidovich Fokina did not face a single break point during the entire final.

From Five Lost Finals to Two Titles in Three Months

The Chengdu triumph underlined how quickly Davidovich Fokina’s fortunes in finals have changed.

Before Mallorca, his ATP Tour finals record stood at 0–5. The Spaniard had reached finals in Monte-Carlo, Delray Beach, Acapulco, Washington and Basel without lifting a trophy.

The Washington defeat in 2025 was particularly difficult after he let three championship points slip against Alex de Minaur.

But after finally breaking through in Mallorca, Davidovich Fokina said winning that first title helped him deal differently with pressure in important moments. Chengdu provided immediate evidence of that change as he saved four set points against Hurkacz before closing out the match in two sets.

His career finals record has now improved to 2–5, with both victories coming during the 2026 season.

Davidovich Fokina’s Road to the Chengdu Title

As the No. 2 seed, Davidovich Fokina received a first-round bye. He then won his first two matches in straight sets before surviving a three-set semifinal against qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili.

His opening match against Juan Manuel Cerundolo was also his first competitive appearance on the ATP Tour since July.

Davidovich Fokina won 6–4, 6–4 before producing an even stronger performance against Alexandre Muller in the quarterfinals, cruising through the first set and eventually winning 6–1, 7–5.

His toughest test came in the semifinals.

Basilashvili took the opening set 6–4, forcing Davidovich Fokina to come from behind. The Spaniard responded by winning the next two sets 6–4, 6–3 to book his seventh ATP Tour singles final.

He then saved his best pressure tennis for the championship match.

Hurkacz Falls Short After Strong Chengdu Run

Hurkacz arrived in Chengdu continuing his return toward the top of the men’s game following the injury problems that disrupted his previous season.

The former World No. 6 had undergone knee surgery in 2025 and returned to competition at the beginning of 2026. He helped Poland win the United Cup in January and later reached the Cagliari Challenger final during the clay season.

In Chengdu, the fifth seed came through a demanding route.

He recovered from a set down against Martin Damm in the second round, defeated qualifier Lloyd Harris 7–6(10), 6–4 in the quarterfinals and then rallied past Denis Shapovalov 6–7(8), 6–3, 6–3 in the semifinals.

His appearance against Davidovich Fokina was his first ATP Tour championship match since finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic in Geneva in 2025.

Hurkacz came within one point of forcing a deciding set on four occasions in Chengdu, but Davidovich Fokina denied him each time.

Johnson and Zielinski Capture First Title Together

The doubles championship went to Luke Johnson and Jan Zielinski, who defeated fourth seeds Robert Galloway and Andre Goransson 7–6(7), 7–5.

Their victory was especially notable considering how they arrived in Chengdu.

Johnson and Zielinski entered the tournament on a seven-match losing streak as a partnership, but completely reversed their form over the course of the week. They survived two Match Tie-breaks on their way to the semifinals before winning their final two matches in straight sets.

The opening set of the final was extremely tight.

Galloway and Goransson created two set-point opportunities in the tie-break, but Johnson and Zielinski saved both before taking it 9–7.

The second set remained on serve until the 11th game. Johnson and Zielinski finally secured the decisive break for 6–5 and then served out the championship, completing the victory in one hour and 32 minutes.

It was the first ATP Tour title for Johnson and Zielinski as a team.

Defending Champions Exit Early

Neither of the 2025 champions successfully defended their Chengdu titles.

Defending singles champion Alejandro Tabilo, seeded third, received a first-round bye but was beaten 6–4, 6–4 by Adrian Mannarino in the second round.

Tabilo had won the 2025 Chengdu crown by defeating Lorenzo Musetti in a three-set final.

In doubles, defending champions Constantin Frantzen and Robin Haase lost in the opening round to Robert Cash and Alexander Erler.

That opened the door for Chengdu to crown new champions in both events.

2026 Chengdu Open Prize Money and ATP Points

The 2026 tournament offered $1,210,115 in total prize money, the largest purse in Chengdu Open history.

Davidovich Fokina earned $184,085 and 250 PIF ATP Rankings points for winning the singles title, while Hurkacz received $107,375 and 165 points as runner-up.
