About the ASB Classic

New Zealand’s Premier Tennis Tournament

The ASB Classic is New Zealand’s leading international professional tennis tournament. Held every January in Auckland, the event welcomes players from the ATP and WTA Tours for two consecutive weeks of hard-court competition.

Unlike many combined tournaments, the ASB Classic holds its women’s and men’s competitions in separate weeks. The WTA 250 event opens the tournament, followed by the ATP 250 event during the week immediately before the Australian Open.

A History Dating Back to 1956

International tennis in Auckland dates back to 1956, when an international invitational tournament was first staged at Stanley Street.

Over the decades, the tournament has welcomed some of the biggest names in tennis, including Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, Margaret Court, Björn Borg, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and Venus Williams.

New Zealand’s Ruia Morrison remains a particularly important figure in the tournament’s history. She won the women’s singles title in 1959 and 1960, becoming the only New Zealand woman to have won the Auckland singles crown.

More recently, Serena Williams won the women’s singles title in 2020, which became the final WTA singles title of her career. Gaël Monfils, Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina are among the tournament’s other notable recent champions.

Manuka Doctor Arena

The ASB Classic is held at the Manuka Doctor Arena, the historic tennis complex on Stanley Street in central Auckland.

The venue includes Centre Court and additional hard courts used for professional matches, qualifying rounds and practice sessions. Its compact stadium atmosphere allows fans to watch professional tennis from relatively close range.

The venue has undergone several upgrades over the years, including improvements to seating and spectator facilities.

More Than a Tennis Tournament

Beyond the matches, the ASB Classic is known for its summer festival atmosphere. Spectators can enjoy food, entertainment, hospitality areas, large screens and other activities around the venue.

The 2026 edition delivered record crowds and sold-out sessions, underlining the tournament’s importance to Auckland’s summer sporting calendar.

Road to the Australian Open

For ATP and WTA players, the ASB Classic offers valuable competitive preparation for the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The 2027 men’s tournament concludes on January 16, one day before the Australian Open main draw is scheduled to begin.

Auckland gives players a chance to build match fitness, gain ranking points and adapt to outdoor hard-court conditions before the first Grand Slam tournament of the season.
