The French Open—widely known as Roland Garros—holds a unique place in tennis history as the first Grand Slam tournament to join the Open era in 1968, opening its doors to both amateurs and professionals and forever changing the sport. Since then, the famous red clay courts of Paris have been graced by some of the game’s all-time greats, including Björn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Gustavo Kuerten, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. French fans still cherish 1983, when Yannick Noah became the first—and to date, the only—Frenchman to claim the men’s singles title. In 2022, Nadal made history once again, becoming the first player in tennis history to win 14 titles at the same Grand Slam event.
The French Open has long been a cherished fixture on the tennis calendar. The women’s singles competition was introduced in 1897, the tournament was elevated to Grand Slam status in 1925, and it has been staged on the outdoor clay courts of Stade Roland Garros since 1928—remaining the only Grand Slam still played on clay. Today, 128 singles players and 64 doubles teams descend upon Paris each year in late May, all eager to etch their names into the tournament’s storied legacy.
