Women’s Singles: Coco Gauff Wins First Wuhan Open Title

Coco Gauff continued her outstanding record in championship matches by defeating Jessica Pegula 6–4, 7–5 to win her first Wuhan Open singles title.

The 21-year-old American completed the victory in one hour and 42 minutes, becoming only the second American woman to win the tournament after Venus Williams in 2015.

The title was Gauff’s second singles championship of 2025, following her French Open triumph in June. It was also her 11th career WTA singles title and third at WTA 1000 level, adding to her previous victories in Cincinnati in 2023 and Beijing in 2024.

Gauff entered the championship match in excellent form, having won every match in straight sets. She continued that impressive run against Pegula, producing 24 winners while maintaining her composure during several difficult moments.

Gauff Recovers from Second-Set Deficit

The final began with Gauff taking control of the opening set.

She broke Pegula’s serve early and established a 3–0 lead before extending her advantage to 4–1.

However, Pegula refused to surrender. The 31-year-old won three consecutive games to level the score at 4–4.

Gauff responded by holding serve in a tense ninth game before breaking Pegula again to take the opening set 6–4.

The second set proved even more dramatic.

Pegula made a strong start, breaking Gauff twice to race into a 3–0 lead. It appeared that the match could be heading toward a deciding set.

But Gauff fought back, winning three consecutive games to level the score at 3–3.

Pegula regained her advantage and moved ahead 5–3, putting herself within one game of forcing a third set.

Once again, Gauff showed her fighting spirit.

The American won four consecutive games, including two crucial breaks of serve, to complete a 7–5 comeback and secure the championship.

She sealed the victory with a powerful forehand winner before celebrating her first title in Wuhan.

Gauff Makes History with Nine Consecutive Hard-Court Final Wins

Gauff’s Wuhan triumph was particularly significant because it extended her perfect record in WTA singles finals played on hard courts.

Following the victory, she became the first player in women’s tennis history to win her first nine hard-court finals, improving her record in those matches to 9–0.

All three of her career singles final defeats up to that point had come on clay courts.

The Wuhan title also demonstrated Gauff’s ability to perform at her best in important moments.

Despite challenges with her serve during the season, she showed impressive consistency and mental strength throughout the tournament.

She did not drop a set in her five matches and conceded only 25 games on her way to the championship, setting a new tournament record for the fewest games lost by a Wuhan Open singles champion.

The victory strengthened her position among the leading players on the WTA Tour and provided an important confidence boost ahead of her WTA Finals title defense in Riyadh.

Jessica Pegula Ends Sabalenka’s Unbeaten Wuhan Run

Although Pegula finished as runner-up, her journey to the final was one of the tournament’s biggest stories.

The American produced a remarkable performance in the semifinals, defeating three-time Wuhan Open champion and World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 2–6, 6–4, 7–6(2).

The result ended Sabalenka’s extraordinary 20-match unbeaten record at the tournament.

Sabalenka had previously won the Wuhan Open in 2018, 2019 and 2024. She entered the 2025 edition having never lost a match at the event.

Against Pegula, the Belarusian looked on course for another victory after taking the first set and building a 5–2 lead in the deciding set.

However, Pegula produced a stunning comeback, winning four consecutive games before eventually taking the deciding tiebreak 7–2.

The semifinal lasted two hours and 19 minutes.

Pegula’s victory was even more impressive considering her demanding schedule. She had already played several consecutive three-set matches during the Asian swing, demonstrating her endurance and determination.

Despite falling short against Gauff in the final, Pegula’s Wuhan performance helped her climb to World No. 5 in the WTA rankings.

Sabalenka Finishes 2025 as World No. 1

Although Sabalenka could not defend her Wuhan title, she remained the leading player in women’s tennis.

The Belarusian went on to finish the 2025 season as the WTA year-end World No. 1 for the second consecutive year.

Her outstanding season included four singles titles, highlighted by her US Open victory, along with championships in Brisbane, Miami and Madrid.

Sabalenka became one of the few players in WTA history to finish multiple seasons at the top of the singles rankings.

Women’s Doubles: Storm Hunter and Kateřina Siniaková Claim Wuhan Title

The women’s doubles competition ended with an impressive victory for Australia’s Storm Hunter and Czech Republic’s Kateřina Siniaková.

The unseeded pair defeated eighth seeds Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan and Aleksandra Krunić of Serbia 6–3, 6–2 in just 69 minutes.

The victory was particularly meaningful for Hunter, who had been working her way back after a serious Achilles tendon injury suffered in April 2024.

The injury required surgery and kept her away from competitive tennis for nearly a year.

Wuhan marked Hunter and Siniaková’s first tournament together in 19 months, following their previous successful partnership.

Despite the long separation, they quickly rediscovered their chemistry.

Hunter and Siniaková Dominate the Final

The Australian-Czech pair made a confident start, breaking their opponents’ serve for a 2–1 lead in the opening set.

They maintained their advantage and closed out the set 6–3.

Danilina and Krunić responded by taking an early 2–0 lead in the second set, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.

However, Hunter and Siniaková immediately regained control.

They won six consecutive games to complete a convincing 6–2 second set and lift the trophy.

Their victory marked their third WTA doubles title together.

For Hunter, it was her ninth career WTA doubles title and fifth at WTA 1000 level. More importantly, it was her first championship since returning from injury.

For Siniaková, the Wuhan victory added another major achievement to an already remarkable doubles career.

The Czech star captured her 32nd WTA doubles title and sixth WTA 1000 crown. It was also her fourth doubles title of the 2025 season.

The result strengthened Siniaková’s position at World No. 1 in doubles, extending her ranking advantage over Taylor Townsend.

Hunter also enjoyed a significant ranking improvement, climbing to World No. 39 in doubles after previously falling outside the Top 1,500 during her injury absence.

Another important milestone came from Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova.
