Alexandra “Alex” Eala is changing the world of tennis for the Philippines. As of June 2026, this 21-year-old athlete has broken records and become the most successful Filipino tennis player in history. She is the very first player from her country to reach the top 30 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world rankings.

Early Life and Family Support

Alex Eala was born on May 23, 2005, in Quezon City, Philippines. Sports run deep in her family’s blood. Her mother, Rosemarie, was a swimming star who won a bronze medal at the 1985 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. Her older brother, Miko, also played competitive college tennis in the United States.

Alex started playing tennis when she was only four years old. Her grandfather, Roberto Maniego, was her first coach and introduced her to the sport. Realizing her huge talent, her family helped her move to Spain to train at the famous Rafa Nadal Academy. She studied and practiced hard there, eventually graduating from the academy in 2023.

Incredible Junior Career

Before making waves in the adult professional tour, Alex was one of the best junior players in the world. She reached the world No. 2 junior ranking in October 2020.

Alex won several Grand Slam titles as a junior player:

  • 2020 Australian Open: Won the girls’ doubles title with her partner Priska Madelyn Nugroho from Indonesia.
  • 2021 French Open: Won another girls’ doubles title, this time with Oksana Selekhmeteva.
  • 2022 US Open: Made history by winning the girls’ singles championship. She was the first Filipino ever to win a junior Grand Slam singles title.

Turning Pro and the Big Breakthrough

Alex turned professional in March 2020, right as the world was changing due to the pandemic. She spent her first few years winning smaller tournaments on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit, collecting five singles titles.

The year 2025 was her true breakout season on the main WTA Tour. As a wildcard entry at the Miami Open, she shocked the tennis world by defeating major champions like Iga Świątek, Jeļena Ostapenko, and Madison Keys. She made it all the way to the semifinals before losing to Jessica Pegula. This incredible run made her the first Filipino player to reach a WTA 1000 semifinal. By March 2025, she entered the top 100 for the first time, and she finished the year ranked No. 50 in the world.

Flying High in 2026

Alex kept her momentum going strong into the 2026 season. She started the year by reaching the semifinals at the Auckland Open. In March 2026, after playing well at big tournaments like Indian Wells and the Dubai Championships, she achieved her highest career ranking of World No. 29.

Her success did not stop on hard courts. In June 2026, Alex proved she can play well on any surface. She won her second WTA 125 singles title at the Birmingham Open on grass. Just a couple of weeks later, she reached the semifinals of the Berlin Open, where she beat former world number one Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina. As of June 29, 2026, she holds a very strong world ranking of No. 32.

Representing the Philippines

Even with her busy tour schedule, Alex always loves playing for her home country. She has won multiple bronze medals for the Philippines at the SEA Games and the Asian Games. In 2024, she led the Philippine team to an undefeated 5–0 record in the Billie Jean King Cup, helping her country move up to a higher division.

With her powerful left-handed shots, smart game play, and calm attitude under pressure, Alex Eala is not just a sports hero for the Philippines—she is one of the most exciting young players in global tennis today.
