In the busy city of London, where streets are loud and life is fast, there is a special place that feels like a quiet garden. This place is called The Queen’s Club. It is not just any sports club. It is a historical treasure, a peaceful hiding spot, and one of the most famous places in the world to play racquet sports.

The Queen’s Club has a long and impressive history. It was established in 1886. That is over 130 years ago! But what makes it truly special is that it was the first multipurpose sports complex ever built, anywhere in the world. Before The Queen’s Club, people built sports centers for only one sport. The Queen’s Club changed that by putting many different sports all in one place.

Today, the club is still one of the most desired memberships in the whole country. This article will explain why. We will look at its history, the sports you can play, the beautiful buildings, and how to join.

A Quick Look at History

The Queen’s Club was named after Queen Victoria, who was the club’s first patron (a special supporter). The first lawn tennis courts opened on 19 May 1887. Soon after, the club buildings were finished in January 1888.

From the very beginning, the club was a busy place. In the late 1920s, the club hosted big university challenges between Oxford and Cambridge in sports like rugby, football, and athletics. These events were so popular that up to 10,000 people would come to watch! Over time, these events grew too big for the club. They moved to larger places like Twickenham and Wembley. As they left, lawn tennis became the main sport played on the club’s grounds.

Over the years, The Queen’s Club has hosted as many as 25 different sporting activities. Some of these might surprise you. Besides tennis, the club has been home to ice-skating, baseball, athletics, and even rugby.

In 2007, something very important happened. The members of the club worked together to buy a 120-year lease. This meant the club returned to being a private Members’ Club, owned and operated by the members themselves. Since then, the members have invested money to improve the facilities. They have refurbished the clubhouse, built a new gym, created a Junior Club for young members, and resurfaced several tennis courts.

Sports at The Queen’s Club: More Than Just Tennis

Most people know The Queen’s Club because of the famous tennis tournament held there every year. However, the club offers many more racquet sports. Members can play on some of the finest courts in the world. Here are the main sports:

  • Lawn Tennis: This is the most famous sport at the club. Every year, the club hosts the HSBC Championships (formerly known as the Queen’s Club Championships). This is a world-famous event that prepares top players for Wimbledon. The club has 28 outdoor courts and ten indoor courts. The grass courts are especially famous for being fast and high-quality.
  • Real Tennis: Many people have never heard of real tennis. It is the original form of tennis, played indoors on a very special, curved court. It is an old and royal sport. The Queen’s Club is the national headquarters of real tennis in the UK. They host the British Open every year and also the World Championship.
  • Rackets: Rackets is a very fast, exciting indoor game. Players hit a hard ball against a wall using a long-handled racket. The Queen’s Club became the headquarters for rackets after another club closed in 1940. They host the World Rackets Championships here.
  • Squash: This is a popular indoor sport where two players hit a small ball against a wall. The club has excellent squash courts and has hosted major events like the ATCO Super Series Squash Finals.
  • Padel: Padel is a newer, growing sport. It is like a mix between tennis and squash. It is played on a smaller court with glass walls and solid rackets. The Queen’s Club now offers padel to its members.

Because the club offers so many different racquet sports, it remains a unique and special place in the world of sports.

An Oasis of Calm in the Big City

One of the best things about The Queen’s Club is its location. It is very close to the centre of London, but it feels like a different world. People call it “an oasis of calm.” You can be on a busy city street one minute, and the next minute, you are surrounded by green grass, quiet gardens, and the soft sound of tennis balls.

The club is situated on Palliser Road in West Kensington. It is very easy to reach. The Baron’s Court Underground station is just 100 metres away, serving the District and Piccadilly lines. If you drive, the club is easily reached from major roads like the M3, M4, and M40. There is also onsite car parking for members.

The overall setting is both tranquil and charming. This peacefulness, combined with the world-class sports facilities, is why so many people want to become members.

The Clubhouse: Dining, Relaxing, and History

The sport is only half of the story. The other half is the beautiful Members’ Clubhouse. Inside, you will find excellent facilities for relaxing, eating, and meeting friends.

  • The Restaurant and Bar: The club has an elegant restaurant and a comfortable bar. After a long game of tennis or squash, members can enjoy a delicious meal or a refreshing drink in a friendly, polite atmosphere.
  • The President’s Room: This is a special, high-class room used for important meetings and dining events. It has been recently refurbished to a very high standard.
  • The Grille: This is another dining area where members eat right in the heart of the club. It is known as a warm and welcoming place.
  • The Museum: The club has its own museum. It holds many historical items, old photos, and trophies from the long history of the club. It is a fascinating place for sports lovers.
  • The Junior Club and Gymnasium: The club has invested in facilities for young members, including a Junior Club. There is also a brand new gymnasium for members who want to stay fit off the court.

How to Join The Queen’s Club

Because The Queen’s Club is so special, it is not easy to become a member. The club has always been, and remains, a racquet sports club. This means that the main reason to apply for membership is because you personally want to play one of the primary racquet sports at Queen’s.

As of 2019, the club has changed its rules regarding new members. As of Friday 22 March 2019, the club suspended the acceptance of applications for Full membership for new applicants of all ages. However, applications remain open for several other categories, including:

  • Off-Peak Membership: This is for people who play mostly during quieter times. It is available for those Over 28, Under 28, and Under 22.
  • Real Tennis, Rackets, and Squash Membership: Because these are specialist sports, the club still accepts applications for players of these sports.
  • Off-Peak Real Tennis, Rackets, and Squash Membership

If you want to apply, you must follow a strict process. First, you need to contact an existing Queen’s Club Member. This person will act as your Proposer. You also need a second existing member to act as your Seconder. Both must have known you for at least two years. They cannot be from the same family as each other.

Additionally, you need at least two other members to act as Supporters. This means you need to know at least four existing members very well. There is also a non-refundable Registration Fee of £250. Finally, if you are over 28 years old, you must purchase a redeemable share. The share price is currently £15,000. This shows a serious commitment to the club.

The Olympic Legacy

Many people do not know that The Queen’s Club has an Olympic history. In 1908, London hosted the Summer Olympics. The Queen’s Club was the official venue for several indoor sports. It hosted the covered courts (indoor) tennis events, the real tennis (called jeu de paume back then) events, and the rackets events. This history connects the club to the highest level of international sport.

Why The Queen’s Club is Still Coveted Today

There are many sports clubs in London. There are many places to play tennis. So, why is The Queen’s Club so special? Why is it one of the most coveted memberships in the country?

The answer comes down to three things:

  1. History and Tradition: The club is the first multipurpose sports complex in the world. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time. You are walking on the same grounds where Olympic athletes played over 100 years ago.
  2. Variety of Sports: Almost nowhere else in the world allows you to play lawn tennis, real tennis, rackets, squash, and padel all in one place on world-class courts.
  3. The Atmosphere: In the middle of West London, the club is a true oasis. It is quiet, green, and elegant. It is a place to escape the noise of the city, play hard, and then relax in a beautiful clubhouse.

Conclusion

The Queen’s Club is more than a building with tennis courts. It is a living piece of sports history. It started in 1886 as the first of its kind, and it has remained a leader in racquet sports ever since. From hosting Olympic events to the famous annual grass-court championships, the club has seen the best players in the world.

For members, it offers a rare gift: the chance to play multiple racquet sports on perfect courts, then relax in a peaceful, charming clubhouse just minutes from central London. While membership is difficult to obtain and requires patience, invitations, and a significant investment, the club stands as a shining example of sporting tradition. Whether you are a tennis player, a squash lover, or simply someone who appreciates history and beauty, The Queen’s Club is a true London treasure.
