Shanghai Masters 2026 Draw Preview: Alcaraz’s Path, Djokovic-Zverev Half & Key Matchups

Rolex Shanghai Masters 2026 Draw Preview

The Shanghai Masters 2026 singles draw is set, and the road to one of the biggest titles of the Asian swing is now much clearer.

With World No. 1 Jannik Sinner out because of his ongoing knee injury, Alexander Zverev takes the No. 1 seed, while Carlos Alcaraz is seeded second. Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev complete the top five seeds.

The 96-player main draw begins on October 7 at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center and runs through October 18. The top 32 seeds receive first-round byes, meaning the leading players will enter in the second round. Twelve more players will join the main draw through qualifying.

The official draw places Zverev, Shelton and four-time Shanghai champion Novak Djokovic in the top half, while Alcaraz, Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime headline the bottom half.

Here is a closer look at the 2026 Shanghai Masters draw, the potential blockbuster matches and which players could have the toughest paths to the final.

Projected Shanghai Masters Quarter-finals

If the highest seeds in each section all advance, these would be the projected quarter-finals:

QuarterSeeded ProjectionMajor Threats
Quarter 1Alexander Zverev vs Flavio CobolliAlex de Minaur, Alexander Bublik, Andrey Rublev
Quarter 2Ben Shelton vs Frances TiafoeNovak Djokovic, Jakub Mensik
Quarter 3Arthur Fils vs Felix Auger-AliassimeRafael Jodar, Learner Tien, Casper Ruud
Quarter 4Daniil Medvedev vs Carlos AlcarazTaylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Valentin Vacherot

The projected semi-finals by seeding are therefore Zverev vs Shelton in the top half and Auger-Aliassime vs Alcaraz in the bottom half.

But Djokovic’s placement as the No. 10 seed makes the top half much more complicated. The Serbian could meet Tiafoe before facing Shelton, with Zverev potentially waiting in the semi-finals.

Carlos Alcaraz’s Shanghai Masters Draw

Carlos Alcaraz arguably has one of the most interesting sections of the draw.

The No. 2 seed receives a first-round bye and will begin against Juan Manuel Cerundolo or a qualifier. The draw places 32nd seed Ignacio Buse as a possible third-round opponent.

Things could become considerably harder in the fourth round.

Alcaraz is seeded to meet either Tommy Paul or defending champion Valentin Vacherot. Vacherot is seeded only 17th despite his historic title run last year, which means one of the tournament’s most dangerous players sits unusually close to Alcaraz in the bracket. ATP highlighted the same potential fourth-round meeting when the draw was released.

If Alcaraz reaches the quarter-finals, Daniil Medvedev or Taylor Fritz could be waiting.

A potential route for Alcaraz therefore looks like this:

Second round: Juan Manuel Cerundolo / qualifier
Third round: Ignacio Buse
Fourth round: Tommy Paul / Valentin Vacherot
Quarter-final: Daniil Medvedev / Taylor Fritz
Semi-final: Felix Auger-Aliassime / Arthur Fils
Final: Zverev / Shelton / Djokovic

Alcaraz has played Shanghai twice before, with his best result coming in 2024 when he reached the quarter-finals.

Djokovic Faces a Dangerous Road

Few players will want to face Novak Djokovic in Shanghai, regardless of the number beside his name.

The four-time champion is seeded 10th, placing him in Ben Shelton’s quarter and Alexander Zverev’s half.

Djokovic receives an opening bye before facing either 2023 Shanghai champion Hubert Hurkacz or James Duckworth.

If the seeds advance, Lorenzo Musetti could follow in the third round before a possible meeting with seventh seed Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16.

Then comes the biggest challenge in his quarter: Ben Shelton.

A possible Djokovic route is:

Second round: Hubert Hurkacz / James Duckworth
Third round: Lorenzo Musetti
Fourth round: Frances Tiafoe
Quarter-final: Ben Shelton
Semi-final: Alexander Zverev
Final: Carlos Alcaraz / Felix Auger-Aliassime / Daniil Medvedev

Djokovic has more reason than most to feel comfortable in Shanghai. He owns a tournament-record four singles titles and enters the 2026 edition as one of the biggest threats outside the top four seeds.

Zverev Leads the Top Half

Alexander Zverev is the top seed following Sinner’s withdrawal and begins his tournament against Chinese wild card Wu Yibing or a qualifier.

His quarter also contains several dangerous players.

Alexander Bublik and Brandon Nakashima occupy another section near the top, while Alex de Minaur, Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov and Flavio Cobolli are grouped in the lower part of the same quarter.

The seeded projection would produce Zverev against Cobolli in the quarter-finals, but De Minaur is an obvious player capable of disrupting that matchup.

Zverev and Djokovic cannot meet before the semi-finals.

That creates the possibility of a major showdown between the current German No. 1 and the most successful player in Shanghai Masters history.

Shelton Could Meet Djokovic in the Quarter-finals

Third seed Ben Shelton has a tricky first match despite receiving an opening-round bye.

Shelton will face either Holger Rune or Daniel Altmaier in the second round. Rune is using a protected ranking and appears directly below Shelton in the draw.

Thirteenth seed Jakub Mensik could then become Shelton’s major Round of 16 obstacle.

The seeded projection technically places Frances Tiafoe opposite Shelton in the quarter-final, but Djokovic is located in Tiafoe’s section. ATP therefore highlighted a possible Shelton-Djokovic quarter-final if the Serbian comes through that part of the draw.

Shelton has already shown that he can produce big results in Shanghai. He reached the quarter-finals on his tournament debut in 2023 after defeating Sinner, and the tournament says he is again chasing valuable points toward qualification for the Nitto ATP Finals.

Medvedev and Fritz Stand Between Alcaraz and the Semi-finals

The final quarter of the draw is particularly deep.

Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev will begin against Martin Landaluce or Jan-Lennard Struff. His section also includes Cameron Norrie, Denis Shapovalov and Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Eleventh seed Taylor Fritz sits on the other side of Medvedev’s Round of 16 section and begins against Matteo Arnaldi or a qualifier.

That creates a projected Medvedev-Fritz fourth-round match, with the winner potentially meeting Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.

Medvedev arrived at the draw ceremony in strong form. ATP noted that he was riding a seven-match winning streak after winning the Hangzhou title and continuing his run in Beijing.

For Alcaraz, that makes the quarter-final stage one of the clearest danger points in his route through the tournament.

Vacherot Returns as Defending Champion — But as the No. 17 Seed

Perhaps the most unusual name in the bracket is Valentin Vacherot.

The Monaco player returns as defending champion after producing one of the greatest surprise title runs in Masters 1000 history in 2025.

He entered last year’s tournament ranked World No. 204, came through qualifying and eventually defeated his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final to become the lowest-ranked Masters 1000 champion in history.

This year he returns as the 17th seed.

Vacherot will begin his title defence against the winner of Marcos Giron vs Sebastian Baez. A meeting with Tommy Paul could then follow before a possible fourth-round clash with Alcaraz.

For a defending champion, that is far from a comfortable draw.

Auger-Aliassime and Fils Headline the Third Quarter

Fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime anchors the third quarter and will begin against Camilo Ugo Carabelli or a qualifier.

Eighth seed Arthur Fils sits at the top of the same quarter. His first opponent will be Tallon Griekspoor or a qualifier.

The section also contains several players capable of going deep, including Jiri Lehecka, Rafael Jodar, Learner Tien, Casper Ruud and Alejandro Tabilo.

One particularly interesting player is Jodar.

The 12th seed will open against either Thiago Agustin Tirante or Hamad Medjedovic. ATP noted that Jodar will be looking to regain momentum after early exits at the US Open and Tokyo.

The seed-line quarter-final is Fils vs Auger-Aliassime, but this section appears considerably more open than that projection suggests.

First-round Matches to Watch

Even with all 32 seeds receiving byes, the opening round contains several interesting matches.

Holger Rune vs Daniel Altmaier is perhaps the most important because the winner gets Shelton. Hubert Hurkacz vs James Duckworth determines Djokovic’s opening opponent, while Martin Landaluce vs Jan-Lennard Struff feeds directly into Medvedev’s section.

Elsewhere, the draw includes Cameron Norrie vs Denis Shapovalov, Arthur Fery vs Marin Cilic, Aleksandar Kovacevic vs Matteo Berrettini, Zhang Zhizhen vs Tomas Machac and Marcos Giron vs Sebastian Baez.

The Giron-Baez winner will immediately face defending champion Vacherot.

Chinese Players in the Shanghai Draw

There will also be several home players for Chinese fans to follow.

Wu Yibing received a wild card and will face a qualifier, with Zverev waiting in the second round.

Zhang Zhizhen faces Tomas Machac, while another Chinese wild card, Zhou Yi, starts against a qualifier.

In the bottom half, Buyunchaokete received a wild card and will play Luca Van Assche, with 20th seed Casper Ruud in that part of the draw.

The official ATP preview identified Bu, Wu and Zhang as the leading Chinese hopes in Shanghai.

Twelve Qualifying Places Still to Be Filled

The draw is not completely filled yet.

A 48-player qualifying field is competing for 12 main-draw positions, with players needing two victories to qualify. Former World No. 21 Lorenzo Sonego is the top qualifying seed, while Roman Safiullin, Nishesh Basavareddy and Cruz Hewitt are among other notable names in qualifying.

Those 12 qualifiers could still significantly change the difficulty of several sections.

This is particularly relevant for players such as Zverev, Alcaraz, Auger-Aliassime and Fritz, whose opening opponents may come through qualifying.

Shanghai Could Be Crucial in the Race to Turin

Beyond the Shanghai trophy, the tournament could have a major impact on qualification for the Nitto ATP Finals.

At the time of the draw, ATP listed Cobolli, Tiafoe, Fils, Medvedev, De Minaur, Djokovic, Jodar, Fritz, Mensik, Paul and Auger-Aliassime from fifth through 15th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.

Only 1,165 points separated Cobolli in fifth and Auger-Aliassime in 15th, making the 1,000 ranking points available in Shanghai potentially season-changing.

That means many of the most interesting matches in the draw could have consequences beyond this tournament.

Who Has the Best Shanghai Masters Draw?

On paper, Alcaraz has avoided Zverev, Shelton and Djokovic until the final, which is an obvious positive.

His own half is far from easy, though. Vacherot or Paul could arrive in the fourth round, Medvedev or Fritz could follow in the quarter-finals, and Auger-Aliassime or Fils could be waiting in the semi-finals.

Zverev has a manageable opening section but faces a deeper quarter containing Cobolli, De Minaur, Rublev and Bublik.

Djokovic arguably has the most demanding projected road among the main title contenders. Hurkacz, Musetti, Tiafoe, Shelton and Zverev could all appear before he even reaches the final.

And defending champion Vacherot has little room to settle into the tournament, with Paul and Alcaraz potentially waiting early.

With Sinner absent, Djokovic chasing a fifth Shanghai title, Vacherot defending one of the most unlikely Masters crowns in history, and several players fighting for Turin, the 2026 Shanghai Masters draw has created plenty of intrigue before the first main-draw match is played.
