Emma Navarro: “We’re Working the Night Shift” — American Resurgent Stars to Reach US Open Quarterfinals After March Break
American Emma Navarro’s remarkable 2026 comeback story picked up another headline chapter on Sunday night inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Delivering a masterclass in composure and tactical consistency, the 25th seed swept past No. 27 seed Anna Kalinskaya 6-4, 6-2 to secure her spot in the US Open quarterfinals.
Navarro, who reached the semifinals in Flushing Meadows during her breakout 2024 season, notched 15 clean winners while committing just 10 unforced errors compared to Kalinskaya’s 32. The victory sets up a blockbuster All-American quarterfinal clash against World No. 3 Jessica Pegula on Tuesday.
“It feels good to be back on Ashe. It has been a couple of years, and I missed it a ton,’’ Navarro told the center-court crowd after her fourth-round win. “I love playing out here, and thank you guys for staying late tonight. We’re working the night shift.”
Reclaiming Balance After a Necessary Reset
Navarro’s path back to the second week in New York has been anything but linear. Following a meteoric rise that saw her reach the 2024 US Open semifinals, 2024 Wimbledon quarterfinals, and 2025 Australian Open quarterfinals—climbing to a career-high World No. 8—the relentless grind of professional tennis eventually caught up with her.
Crushed by mounting expectations and mental fatigue, Navarro made the brave choice to pause her season in March, skipping major events in Miami and her hometown tournament in Charleston to prioritize her mental and physical health.
“Definitely exacerbated by playing tennis,’’ Navarro reflected at Roland Garros regarding the tour’s grueling nature. “The tour is tough, and it’ll take it out of you. It’s constant travel and a lot of stress on the body and the mind.’’
That pit stop proved transformative. Navarro returned refreshed in May, capturing her first career clay-court title in Strasbourg. Now back on hard courts, the American exhibits an unflappable serenity on court, making her one of the most dangerous, steady competitors in the draw.
Tactical Masterclass Against Kalinskaya
In a laser-focused opening set, Navarro surrendered just four points on serve. The first break opportunity of the match doubled as set point for Navarro at 5-4, which she converted on her second chance when a Kalinskaya backhand found the net.
“The first set was neck and neck,’’ Navarro explained. “I had some trouble getting some headway against her serve, but got it when I needed to, and then I was pretty comfortable in the second set.’’
As Kalinskaya’s serve faltered under pressure—finishing with nine double faults—Navarro took control of the baseline, repeatedly forcing her opponent to hit extra balls. With a decisive second-set break in hand, Navarro cruised into her fourth career Grand Slam quarterfinal, proving that taking time away was the best decision for her career.
