Round of 16 — Husband-and-Wife Duo Monfils and Svitolina Triumph in US Open Mixed Doubles Debut
Elina Svitolina / Gael Monfils defeated Alexandra Eala / Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-1, 4-1
In their first-ever competitive doubles appearance together, Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils delivered a swift, dominant performance at Louis Armstrong Stadium, defeating Alexandra Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-1, 4-1 in the first round of the 2026 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship.
Playing under the tournament’s revamped format—which features short, first-to-four-game sets and no-ad scoring—the married couple needed just 15 minutes to secure the opening set. Although Auger-Aliassime and Eala held serve to claim the opening game, Svitolina and Monfils quickly found their rhythm, holding serve and stringing together three consecutive games to close out the set 4-1.
Extending their momentum into the second set, Svitolina and Monfils pushed their winning streak to five straight games to take an early 1-0 lead. The Filipina-Canadian pair rallied back, powered by an energetic crowd full of Filipino fans eager to cheer on Eala, now ranked in the Top 20. The “Eala Effect” brought thousands of spectators into Armstrong on Tuesday morning, creating an electric atmosphere as Eala and Auger-Aliassime forced groundstroke errors to level the set at 1-1.
However, Monfils, who is competing in his final US Open before retiring later this season, proved relentless. Blending his signature showmanship with steady court coverage alongside Svitolina, the duo reclaimed control to win the next two games, sealing the victory when Auger-Aliassime sent a backhand into the net.
The victory marks a memorable milestone for Svitolina and Monfils as they advance, adding a special chapter to Monfils’ farewell run in Flushing Meadows.
Round of 16 — Doubles Specialists Siniakova and Patten Overpower Star-Studded Duo of Djokovic and Sabalenka at US Open
Katerina Siniakova / Henry Patten defeated Novak Djokovic / Aryna Sabalenka (1) 1-4, 4-2, [10-2]
In a clash packed with star power, doubles world No. 1s Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten delivered a tactical masterclass at Arthur Ashe Stadium, upending the top-seeded tandem of Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka 1-4, 4-2, [10-2] in the opening round of the 2026 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship.
Despite having never paired up before, Djokovic and Sabalenka—the defending US Open women’s singles champion—started with remarkable synergy. Utilizing the tournament’s revamped format featuring four-game sets and no-ad scoring, the high-profile duo tore through the opening set in just 12 minutes, with Djokovic serving out a love game to take it 4-1.
Siniakova and Patten found themselves under early pressure again in the second set, dropping serve to fall behind 1-2. However, the doubles specialists quickly recalibrated, breaking back immediately to level the set before breaking Djokovic’s serve to claim the set 4-2 and force a decisive 10-point match tiebreak.
The tiebreak belonged entirely to Siniakova and Patten. Capitalizing on a Djokovic double-fault to secure an early mini-break, they raced out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back, surrendering just one more point to seal the tiebreak 10-2.
Despite the loss, both Djokovic and Sabalenka showed encouraging health, movement, and sharp play following earlier-than-expected singles exits at the Cincinnati Open, delighting the crowd in Ashe throughout the high-energy contest.
Siniakova and Patten now advance to face another marquee matchup in the next round, where they will take on married pair Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina.
Round of 16 — Czech Pair Muchova and Mensik Edge Mladenovic and Arevalo to Reach US Open Mixed Doubles Quarterfinals
Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik defeated Kristina Mladenovic and Marcelo Arevalo 4-1, 2-4, [10-7]
Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik showcased their dark-horse potential at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, outlasting Kristina Mladenovic and Marcelo Arevalo 4-1, 2-4, [10-7] to book their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2026 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship.
The burgundy-clad Czech duo came out firing in the opening set, powered by Muchova’s versatile shotmaking and Mensik’s net presence. After Mensik set up a break point with a sharp stab volley, Muchova converted with a forehand winner to take a 2-1 lead. The pair maintained their momentum, breaking Arevalo’s serve to seal the fast-paced opening set in just 11 minutes.
Mladenovic and Arevalo—a 2021 US Open mixed doubles finalist—mounted a quick response in the second set. Breaking Mensik at love to open the set, Arevalo held serve to construct a quick 2-0 cushion. Although Muchova and Mensik managed to erase three set points from 15-40 down to hold for 2-3, Arevalo served out the 25-minute set to force a 10-point match tiebreak.
In the decider, Muchova’s timely backhand return winner pushed the Czechs ahead to a 7-4 lead. Serving for the match, Mensik engaged in a heavy forehand exchange that ultimately drew an error from his opponents, closing out the 52-minute victory.
Despite their lack of competitive history together, Muchova’s all-court creativity and Mensik’s explosive serve proved to be a lethal combination.
“The last time I played mixed was when I was like nine years old,” Mensik joked following the match. “I just hope that we will keep the winning streak.”
