(UPDATE) Fonseca Forced to Exit Cincinnati with Abdominal Injury
Joao Fonseca, currently ranked World No. 26 in the PIF ATP Rankings, has been forced to withdraw from the Cincinnati Open due to a left abdominal injury. The 19-year-old announced the decision via social media on Monday, disappointing fans who had been eager to see him continue his run at the ATP Masters 1000 event.
"Today during practice, I felt a slight discomfort on the left side of my abdomen," Fonseca shared on his Instagram Stories. "After undergoing tests, my team and I made the decision to pull out of the Cincinnati Open in order to focus on a full and fast recovery."
He went on to express gratitude toward the tournament organizers and supporters: "Thank you for the hospitality, @cincytennis, and to the fans for your continued support. See you next year."
The Brazilian had been scheduled to face Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell in the third round on Tuesday. Prior to his withdrawal, Fonseca had kicked off his campaign with a solid victory over Botic van de Zandschulp.
So far in 2026, Fonseca holds a 19–13 win-loss record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Despite the setback, the #NextGenATP standout remains one of the most exciting young talents on tour, already boasting two ATP Tour titles to his name.
